Soft bulletproof backpack inserts are lightweight and effective against multiple types of ammunition, and they represent the future of military protection.
Soft Bulletproof Backpack Insert Materials
- Kevlar: Aramid fiber Kevlar, created by DuPont and introduced in the 1970s, has a tensile strength five times that of steel but weighs a fraction of an ounce. Bullets can’t penetrate many layers of Kevlar sheets made from cross-woven fibers.
- Twaron: Like Kevlar, Twaron is a para-Aramid fiber that is extremely strong but also very light and resistant to heat. It finds widespread application in manufactured items that must stand the test of time.
- Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE): This material is stronger than steel by a factor of 15. It finds application in everything from fishing lines to artificial joints.
- Artificial fibers: Gold Shield and Spectra Shield are also commonly utilized in bulletproof backpack inserts. Both items come from Honeywell. In contrast to Spectra Shield, which is constructed from HMWPE, Gold Shield is an Aramid-based fiber.
Hard Bulletproof Backpack Inserts
Hard bulletproof backpack inserts defend its wearer from a greater variety of weapons, but it is also much heavier. Hard body armor often consists of either ceramic or commercial ballistic steel. Industrial ballistic steel has been modified to withstand bullet impact and minimize fragmentation. There are varying hardness levels of hard bulletproof backpack inserts, with the plates used in Level III backpacks often falling somewhere in the middle. In a layering process, these ceramic or monolithic armor plates are made from various materials, including Kevlar or Spectra fibers. The ceramic’s composite layers stop and compress bullets thanks to the plate’s hardness. Ceramic material is typically heavier than other hard bulletproof plate insert options.
